As bloggers search for ways to stay relevant and cultivate success in 2021, it’s important to look beyond the most recent trends and focus instead on the true path to success – knowledge. Joining the throngs posting about COVID or jumping on the video blogging or podcasting bandwagon won’t help you stand out from the crowd of other bloggers all headed the same direction. Rather, you need to understand why you’re blogging (your purpose and goals), who you’re trying to reach, and what type of content is most likely to engage your target audience.

If your blog functions as a portfolio of your creative abilities, you’ll need to make sure they’re reflected there. If you’re a professional writer, for example, moving to video blogging is unlikely to be beneficial. Are you blogging primarily for SEO purposes, to draw new contacts to your company’s website? Then again, moving primarily to a video or audio format is likely to hinder your progress rather than help.

But what if your target audience consists mainly of contacts who have already engaged with your content (or current customers) and you want to supply them with information about the features and benefits of the products you’re promoting? In that case, incorporating more video might be just the ticket. And if your target market consists of teens or young adults, video is the format most likely to engage their attention and propel them to action.

As you can see, there are three important steps you should take to gather the knowledge that will help you reach your blogging objectives in 2021:

  1. Carefully examine your purpose for blogging and the goals you’re hoping to achieve.
  2. Take the time to develop detailed buyer personas for your target audience.
  3. Learn what type of content best attracts those in your target market and what will drive them to take the desired actions (keeping each stage of the buyer’s journey in mind).
